Silver Birch Tree | Betula Pendula
The Highlights
- One of our most iconic native trees, Silver Birch makes an impact in any garden with its elegant silver-white bark and gracefully weeping branches
- The silver bark sheds its layers like paper, developing contrasting dark fissures and cracks with age that make each tree unique
- Silver Birch trees support over 300 insect species as well as moths and many diverse fungi. Hole-nesting birds such as woodpeckers make their homes in the trunk
- Bright green serrated edged leaves form a light, airy canopy which allows for underplanting, turning golden yellow in autumn
- Yellow and green catkins appear in April and May, hanging in clusters like lambs' tails. Their seeds are enjoyed by birds including Siskins, Greenfinches & Redpolls
- Silver Birch improves your soil - it spreads its roots wide, bringing otherwise inaccessible nutrients into the tree. These are then transferred into the soil by falling leaves.
- In Celtic folklore, Silver Birch symbolises renewal, and bundles of its twigs were used to drive out the spirits of the old year.
- Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™.
- Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch.
- Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching.

Care Guide
High Pest/Disease resistance
Generally pest and disease resistantMORE
Water regularly when newly planted
Water young trees regularly until roots are well established
Full Sun
Position in Full Sun (6h+) or partial shade
Moist but well-drained soil
Suits any soil type that is moist but well-drained
Prune Annually
Any pruning should be done when the tree is fully dormant, from late summer until early winter. If you prune in late winter or early spring when the sap is 'rising' this can cause heaving bleeding of sap and weaken or even kill the tree
