Chelsea Flower Show 2021

Chelsea Flower Show - the highlight of the gardening year - is usually held in May, but for this year only it’s running from the 21-26th of September. We’ve been busy checking out all the best plants in the show to inspire you with this special edit. Show garden themes this year include Sustainability and the positive impact of plants on our health and wellbeing, and we love the new Balcony and Container Gardening categories. With award winning Salvias, Hostas, native trees and more, these plants are guaranteed to bring a bit of gold medal glitz to your patch! Read on for our pick of the show.

Show Gardens: The RHS Cop26 Garden

We were so impressed with this garden themed around the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, which is full of ways that we can help combat climate change in our own gardens, including planting pollinator-friendly perennials and conserving water. We loved the Universal Windowbox, a cottage garden in a small space which mixes perennials with food plants and can be recreated by anyone - no matter how small your space! Read our feature to find out more about conserving water in your garden.

Balcony Gardens: The Green Sky Pocket Garden

How to make the most of your balcony! This garden shows how every inch of outdoor space can be maximised to improve your habitat. It features trees, sculpture, low-growing succulents and bee-friendly perennials. Much of the planting is edible and scented, with windowboxes full of lush, fragrant herbs - find out how to start your own herb garden here.

Container Gardens: The IBC Pocket Forest

This garden delivers on so many levels. It’s sustainably built from repurposed shipping containers, features UK trees including Hawthorn, Silver Birch, Hazel and Rowan and shows how effectively you can plant a relaxing wellbeing garden in a small space. We love that the designers have really pushed the boundaries of container gardening, demonstrating that ornamental native trees can be successfully grown in pots. Native trees have also been used in the Gold medal winning Yeo Valley Organic Garden - we think we spot a trend! check out our collection here.

Stars of the Show

As the show was held in September for the first time this year, late flowering perennials were firmly in focus, with Salvia, Hyssop, Achillea, Dahlia, Leucanthemum and Echinacea featuring in many of the winning gardens. Over in the Great Pavilion, there were gold medals for Hosta and Heuchera, with Penstemon, Peonies and Grasses all making a splash. We loved the greater emphasis on trees this year, with The Queen's Green Canopy garden taking the largest plot. This project is really catching people’s imaginations, with millions of us expected to plant a tree this autumn to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
