The highlights

  • Gorgeous juicy little fruits with a slight red flush
  • Fast growing and heavy cropping - don't worry, they freeze well!
  • Superb in a greengage and pistachio cobbler
  • Pick from late August to early September

Description

  • A classic English green gage with a sweet, high quality flavour
  • Equally good for eating or cooking
  • A very reliable cropper with consistent harvests from year to year
  • Late season harvest - pick in September
  • Thought to be a seedling of Old Green Gage, grown by Chivers the jam manufacturers in the early 20th century in the Cambridge area. Probably discovered between 1850-1890
  • Winner of both the RHS Award of Garden Merit and RHS Plants for Pollinators
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

9L Eco Pot
This tree is supplied in a 9L Poly-Pot, which is approx D15 x H30cm. Poly-Pots use 70% less plastic then traditional pots and can be recycled easily. A 9L pot allows ample space for good root development and can support a good size tree.

Eventual height:

Time to first crop:

4 years
You may see your first plums 3 years after planting, but you should not expect substantial crops until the 4th/5th year.

Hardiness:

Hardy
May require some protection from very late frosts as this can damage the flowers. This won't cause lasting damage to the tree but will reduce the yield of fruit that year.

Self fertile:

Partially self fertile
For the heaviest crops it is best grown with another variety. If you only have room for one tree then make sure that a neighbour has a tree close by that can act as a suitable pollinator. P

Rootstock:

St Julien A
Plum varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. SJA plum trees tend to only reach 4m tall, perfect for smaller spaces or those afraid of stepladders. They can also be trained to a smaller size by pruning or restricting the roots, by keeping in a smaller pot.

Spacing:

3m

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Shows some resistance to the main pests and diseases for plums. You may see some damage from aphids and caterpillars, which can both be washed away with soapy water. Birds will eat the plums if given the chance so take steps to prevent this like using a fruit net or bird scarers. Reduce the risk of bacterial canker by pruning to improve airflow and remove rotting organic matter nearby.MORE

Full sun

Plant where the tree will receive around 6-8 hours of sunlight daily in spring/summer.

Prefers well-drained loamy soils

Will tolerate less than perfect conditions but may not fruit too well. Will struggle in poorly draining soil.

Some structural pruning required

Some pruning should be done each winter to ensure that your Plum tree maintains a productive shape. This can improve yields and prevent disease.
