The highlights

  • Deliciously juicy fruit
  • Compact enough for small spaces
  • Enjoy fresh with cream or baked in a pie
  • Harvest from August

Description

  • 'Avalon Pride' is one of our very favourite peach varieties, and by growing it on a dwarf rootstock, you can have it as a tree that's small enough to keep on your patio!
  • Typically growing to just 1.5m tall, this tree will do brilliantly on a sunny balcony or in a south-facing courtyard garden
  • This tree's plump peaches have wonderful flavour and are just asking to be eaten fresh straight from the tree. If you can resist that, though, then why not make an American-style cobbler or dry them for a tasty snack?
  • Recognised by the RHS as one of its Plants for Pollinators, this tree is a great choice to get more bees coming to your garden
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

What To Expect

Supplied as:

Potted tree
Patio tree in a 4.5L pot

Height on arrival:

60-90cm

Eventual height:

1-1.5m

Eventual spread:

0.5-1m
Spreads approximately 0.5-1m.

Tasting notes:

Sweet and juicy with a good depth of flavour

Time to first crop:

2 years
You may see your first peaches after two years but you should not expect to see substantial crops for another two to three years after that.

Flower colour:

Pink
Pink flowers appear in March and April

Habit:

Upright
A manageable upright tree that stays nice and compact.

Hardiness:

Hardy
H4 - May require some protection from very late frosts as this can damage the flowers. This won't cause lasting damage but may reduce the yield of fruit that year.

Self fertile:

Self fertile
Does not require a pollination partner in order to bear fruit.

Pollination group:

3
Pollination groups relate to the time of the year when a tree flowers. Trees that flower at the same time are able to pollinate each other, leading to fruit production in self-sterile trees, but also often improving yields among self-fertile trees (even though they don't technically need a pollinating partner). Trees can usually pollinate a group either side of their own; i.e "3" can Pollinate 2, 3, and 4.

Uses:

Eating fresh and baking

Rootstock:

Dwarf rootstock
Peach varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. Dwarf peach trees tend to only reach 1.5m tall, perfect for smaller spaces.

Spacing:

1m
Plant 1m apart to allow for spreading.

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Shows excellent resistance to the main pests and diseases for peaches. Has high resistance to peach leaf curl. Curled leaves will occasionally occur at the beginning of the spring, but re-infection to subsequent leaves is extremely rare. Avalon Pride can suffer from powdery mildew in very dry conditions (this can sometimes be confused for leaf curl). You may see some damage from aphids and caterpillars, which can both be easily washed away with soapy water. Birds may try and nab your peaches. Reduce the risk of bacterial canker by pruning to improve airflow and remove rotting organic matter nearby.

Water regularly

Container-grown fruit trees require more regular watering than their ground-grown counterparts. In hot, dry weather, this might mean that daily watering is needed.

Full sun

For best growth, plant your peach tree in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any moist, well-drained compost

When growing your patio peach tree in a pot, use a compost mix like John Innes No.3.

Feed every fortnight throughout the growing season

Your patio peach tree will benefit from a liquid fertiliser feed every couple of weeks or so in spring and summer. Something like tomato feed is ideal.
