Collection: Primrose Plants
The modest primrose has had something of a reboot lately, with plant growers creating dozens of eye-catching colour combinations and patterns – stripes, frills and bicolours – to bring a new lease of life to this perennial winter favourite. Prefer the natural look? Native cowslips and wild primroses (Oberon’s oxlips from A Midsummer Night’s Dream) exude timeless beauty and wildlife appeal. Grown sustainably in the Herefordshire Hills by our grower, Jack, our primrose plants are hardy, healthy and anything but humble.

Which primrose?
There are a large number of beautiful primroses you can choose from, depending on what you’re looking for. Consider the OG primrose, Wild Primrose – also known as the English primrose – for an iconic garden staple, or the Cowslip, for something with a touch more of the wild about it. Looking for a primrose with a showier side? Why not consider the delightful, puffed up pompoms of the Drumstick Primula.

Planting schemes and partners
With their dazzling colours, primroses are ideal for lawn and path edging, showing off in pots or as ground cover under trees and shrubs in those dappled, shadier spots. Plant your primroses alongside ferns, hostas, foxgloves and heucheras to create your very own magical woodland glade. Primroses are also good for wildlife gardens, providing an important source of nectar to attract early pollinators like bees and hoverflies to your garden.

Growing tips
Champions of the partially shaded spots in your garden, primroses typically perform best in gently dappled light and indirect sunshine. Primroses like moist soil, which is handy given we live in a country prone to the odd downpour – or twenty. They prefer the tart zinginess of a slightly acidic soil, but they’ll still tolerate most neutral soils nicely. Primroses are tough customers, and they’ll normally withstand temperatures all the way down to -15°C (or colder!)
Primrose FAQs
When is the best time to plant primroses in the UK?
Primroses are best planted in the autumn, from September to October, or in early spring, from March to April.
Where should I plant primroses?
Primroses like to be in partial shade or full shade and in well draining soil. They’re great for the front of borders, under trees or in pots.
How often should I water primroses?
Primroses like to be in consistently moist soil. Water them regularly when they’re newly planted and during hot and dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
Do primroses need fertiliser?
Go easy on the fertiliser - primroses don’t necessarily need it but you can give them a feed once or twice during the growing season if they’re looking a bit tired. Avoid over feeding them though, as this can result in a lot of leggy growth as opposed to flowers.
How do I deadhead primroses?
Deadheading faded flowers helps to encourage continuous blooming - pinch them off at the base of the stem.
Do primroses need to be divided?
If your primroses become overcrowded after a few years, dividing them will give them an energy boost (and give you new plants!) Do this in autumn or early spring, by digging up the clump and separating it into several pieces, each with roots and shoots. Then you can replant them where you like.
Can I grow primroses indoors?
Primroses can be grown indoors in pots - they’ll thrive near a window with indirect sunlight, with the soil kept consistently moist.
When do primroses bloom?
Primroses flower from late winter to early summer, depending on the variety and which area of the Uk you’re in.
How do I care for primroses in winter?
Primroses are fully hardy in the UK, but you can provide some protection against severe frosts by mulching around the plants in autumn. Make sure the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged during the winter months.
Happy plants make happy customers

Plants arrived in great condition and very promptly. Well established - much better than the ones I got at my local garden centre.
