Sweet Peas

You only have to say ‘sweet peas’ to summon up the memory of endless summers. Scrambling up a trellis or obelisk, these delightful climbing annuals have an unmistakable perfume that lilts on the breeze. With flowers in everyone’s favourite nostalgic colours, they’re a cottage garden must have. Plant them by a door or path, then enjoy them in a vase - the more you cut, the more they bloom! After they’ve finished, collect the seed pods and grow them all over again next year.

Sweet Pea FAQs

When is the best time to plant sweet peas?

Plant your sweet peas in early spring, after the last frost date in your area. This allows them to establish a strong root system and flower nice and early as soon as the weather warms up.

Where should I plant sweet peas?

Sweet peas prefer a location with full sun but they’ll also grow in partial shade. They grow quickly, so it’s a good idea to get a support structure, such as a trellis or fence, in place from the start. If you’re planting in pots you can use an obelisk in the pot.

What’s the best soil for planting sweet peas?

Use a well draining, fertile soil for your sweet peas - a mixture of garden topsoil and compost is ideal. If your soil is nutrient poor, mix in some fresh compost or well rotted manure before planting.

How often should I water sweet pea plants?

Sweet peas like their soil to be moist, but waterlogging can kill them. Once they’re established and putting on lots of leafy growth, your plants should only need watering in hot or dry weather.

Do sweet peas need fertiliser?

Sweet peas do benefit from regular feeding, and produce more flowers. Use a general purpose liquid or granular feed and apply it every two weeks throughout the flowering season (June to September).

How tall do sweet pea plants grow?

Sweet pea plants can grow anywhere from 90-180cm tall, depending on the variety. Hanging basket sweet peas are more compact and have a trailing habit, whereas climbing sweet peas grow as tall stems from which the flower stalks develop.

When should I cut sweet peas?

Pick your sweet peas as often as possible throughout their blooming period, as this encourages the plant to produce more. The best time to do this is when the flower has just opened and before it starts to fade.

Can I save seeds from my sweet pea plants?

Saving sweet pea seeds is a great way to get more plants for free. Just let the pods dry on the plant or pick them off and keep them in a dry envelope. When they’re fully dried out, store the seeds in a cool, dry place until the following spring.

Can I grow sweet peas in containers?

Sweet peas are a great choice for growing in containers. Make sure they have adequate support to climb up, either in the pot or next to it, and choose pots that are large enough for the plants to be spaced at least 20cm apart.
