Climbing Plants FAQs
What are the best climbing plants?
Here are the climbing plants that made our top 5:
- Wisteria - A vigorous climber with woody vines covered in bunches of warmly fragranced flowers.
- Clematis - One of the best loved flowering climbers, and for good reason!
- Ivy - Hardy evergreen climbing or groundcover plants, self-clinging so no support needed.
- Honeysuckle - A vigorous climber with clusters of deliciously scented flowers to attract the birds and the bees.
- Climbing rose - Beautiful, long-lived and fragrant climbing roses are the perfect plants to grow up walls, fences, pergolas and more.
What is the fastest-growing climbing plant?
We’d say wisteria is pretty quick! Astonishingly beautiful plants, wisterias can grow 3-4.5m every year. Why not take a look at some other contenders?
What climbing plants bear fruit?
Climbing plants are a great way of maximising your space by growing upwards and if your vertical garden can produce delicious fruits, even better! Check out our five favourite fruiting climbers If you haven't got the time for that, then consider kiwi, passion fruit and grape vines.
What plants like to climb walls?
Covering an unsightly house or garden wall with climbing plants will add colour, fragrance, and even soften noise from adjacent properties. But how do you choose the best one for you? We’ve done the leg work so you don’t have to. In a hurry? Ivy, Virginia creeper, honeysuckle and clematis are all good picks.
When should I plant my climbers?
Autumn is best as the soil is still warm enough to encourage some root growth before winter. In addition, climbers in containers can be planted at any time of the year, so long as the ground is not frozen.
What is the easiest climber to grow?
There is no doubt that clematis is one of the easiest climbing plants to grow but don't underestimate them! They will climb almost anything.
Do climbing plants need a trellis?
The structure you choose, unless the climber is self-clinging, must be strong and secure since mature climbing plants become heavy with age. If the climber isn't self-clinging, then you'll need to install a framework around it prior to planting.
