How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Some celery problems you may encounter are slugs and snails and celery leaf spot.If you see the telltale slimy trails, surround your plant with a barrier of copper wire, fine gravel or crushed eggshells, which they cannot cross. Plants should always be spaced well apart to allow air to circulate and prevent disease.

Water regularly

Keep the soil consistently moist to ensure rapid, even growth and strong stalks that don’t split.

Full sun to partial shade

Celery needs around 6-8 hours of sunlight every day. Partial shade during the hottest parts of the day will help prevent the plant bolting.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Celery needs very fertile soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.

Feed shortly after planting

After a couple of weeks, sprinkling a feed of chicken manure pellets (or other nitrogen rich feed) will help give the plants an additional nutrient boost. You can also add a layer of garden compost or manure to act as a mulch–, giving the soil more nutrients and helping to lock in moisture.
