- Taking their name from the Greek physician, Paeon, who tended to the Ancient Greek gods, peonies serve as a wonderful symbol of protection and prosperity, and look beautiful as they do so.
- With their lush green foliage and billowing, bowl-shaped blooms, peonies look fantastic in beds, borders and containers. They make for excellent cut flowers, too, so if you know your recipient likes a bouquet or two, it's a great pick.

Herbaceous Peonies typically grow to a height and spread of around 80 to 90 centimetres.

The Peony requires a position in full sun to produce its spectacular, large blooms, though it can tolerate light dappled shade.

The Peony prefers a deep, fertile, and moisture-retentive soil that is well-drained, ideally neutral to slightly alkaline.

The Peony requires regular watering during its first year, but once established, it only needs supplementary watering during prolonged dry spells.

The Peony does not require pruning, but you should cut the foliage down to ground level in autumn after it has died back to prevent disease.
