South Downs National Park
Meet Danielle
110 years' expertise free with every tree
Danielle's nursery has been growing trees in the South Downs National Park for over a century, and it shows. Dug up and sent straight to your garden at between 18-36 months old, their quality rootstocks, expert pruning and natural pest control mean that these traditionally field-grown trees are the hardiest you can get.
Need help picking?

Which mature tree should I choose?
We’ve got a whole range of mature trees, so don’t worry if you’re unsure which to go for – we can help. We’ll break it down for you. Do you want an ornamental or fruiting tree? For ornamental trees, you can opt for something like a showy cherry blossom, a graceful acer or a tactile silver birch. In terms of fruit trees, you can go for a heritage favourite like the ‘Conference’ pear or the ‘Victoria’ plum, or something a bit different, like the ‘Jelly King’ crabapple (whose fruits make an amazing jelly if you can get to them before the birds!)

Why buy a mature tree?
Undoubtedly, one of the main benefits of purchasing a mature tree is that it adds instantaneous impact to your garden; unlike a one or two-year-old tree, which will take some years to grow to its ultimate height, mature trees will arrive with a hefty headstart. No waiting around required. Because of their already-developed root network, mature trees also have a greater chance of successfully establishing in your garden when planted.

Caring for mature trees
Mature trees come with a hefty rootball, meaning they’ll initially need a lot of regular watering throughout the first growing season (or two) to help them establish as well as possible. This watering is particularly important during hot, dry spells. Many of our mature trees have been grown using innovative Air-Pots® which help eliminate root spiralling and lead to quicker establishment after planting. To keep your tree secure, use one of our planting kits, which features wooden stakes, a plant tie and some Rootgrow you can sprinkle in the planting hole before you put the tree in.
Happy plants make happy customers

Plants arrived in great condition and very promptly. Well established - much better than the ones I got at my local garden centre.

I continue to be so impressed with Roots. Their customer care, knowledge of their subject: from planting hedges to pruning roses and more, has been a great support.
