The highlights

  • Honeyed sweetness with real depth
  • Doesn't need acid soil (unlike blueberries)
  • Eat fresh, use in jams and toss in muffins
  • Harvest in June

Description

  • If you're looking for some new fruit to grow, then may we kindly point you in the direction of the 'Blue Velvet' honeyberry bush!
  • Boasting delightful, trumpet-shaped white flowers and lush green foliage, this shrubby bush would be a lovely plant even without the berries - but when you throw in the fruits on top of that? Wowzer...
  • The elongated, cylindrical blue berries are ready to harvest at the beginning of summer and have a wonderful sweet taste, combined with a lovely hint of tang.
  • A seriously tough cookie, this plant will tolerate whatever temperatures the British winter can throw at it, and just to top it all off, it's nice and easy to grow.
  • If there was going to be a fruit to wrestle the superfood title from the blueberry, it would be the honeyberry. Bursting with vitamins A and C, as well as a whole host of beneficial antioxidants, these blue fruits are undoubtedly the best new health food in town.

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Rarely troubled by pests or diseases.

Water well when establishing

Keep your honeyberry bush well-watered throughout its first growing season to help it establish. Once established, however, it will only need additional watering in hot, dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Grows best in full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day) but tolerates partial shade.

Any moist, well-drained soil

This plant tolerates a range of soils, provided that drainage is good, and unlike blueberry bushes, doesn't require acidic soil to grow.

Feed every spring

Give your honeyberry bush a balanced fertiliser feed every spring. Apply a layer of mulch in the autumn.
