  • Voluminous, double white flowers
  • Pruning group 2 - light pruning
  • Full sun to partial shade, fully hardy (H6)
  • Flowers June to September

Description

  • The billowing double white blooms of 'Duchess of Edinburgh' make a magnificent addition to any garden, and look best when twined over a pergola or trellis!
  • First grown all the way back in 1875, and named after the second Duchess of Edinburgh - Maria Alexandrovna - this delightful variety warrants its regal title and then some
  • Ovate green leaves serve as the perfect backdrop against which the vine's showy flowers can truly shine
  • If you want, you can even plant your clematis in a large pot on the patio and grow it up an obelisk!
  • Falling into pruning group 2, this clematis benefits from a light prune at the end of winter - for more information, check out our article: Clematis Pruning Groups
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Clematis plants, including 'Duchess of Edinburgh, can be affected by aphids and capsid bugs. These can easily be washed off with soapy water, however.

Water well when estabishing

Established clematis plants don't typically require additional watering, except for in hot conditions. As they're establishing, however, throughout their first growing season, more regular watering is recommended.

Full sun to partial shade

Your clematis' vines will typically grow best in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day). By contrast, the roots and base of the plant prefer to be kept cool (and therefore shaded) so a layer of gravel or mulch can be helpful.

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

Clematis plants grow best in rich, fertile soil with good drainage (but also some moisture retention). If your soil is poor or heavy, then work in some organic matter to improve both drainage and fertility.

Feed every spring

Each spring, give your clematis a fertiliser feed (using something that's high in potassium). Mulch around the plant's base afterwards. If you're growing your clematis in a pot, then a monthly liquid feed throughout the growing season is beneficial.
