  • Pruning group 3 - loves a prune
  • Full sun, fully hardy (H6)
  • Flowers June to September

Description

  • If you were to give us this plant as a birthday present, we'd be bloomin' chuffed! With its showy, purple sepal/white anther combination, this clematis is guaranteed to turn heads wherever it's found
  • The six-sepal flowers emerge an intense purple before fading to more of a slate-like, blueish hue with age, offering a brilliant contrast to the plant's lush green foliage
  • Growing to just a few metres tall, this variety is perfect for twining over a pergola, or growing up an obelisk placed at the heart of a flower bed
  • This variety is a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, which is conferred upon plants that have been proven to perform particularly well in British gardens
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Your clematis might be affected by aphids, but these can be tolerated in small populations. If the numbers begin to get out of hand, you can wash the affected area with a soapy spray mix.

Water well when estabishing

Your clematis plant should be watered routinely throughout the growing season (particularly during hot, dry spells) to help it establish. Beyond this, additional watering will only be needed when the weather is especially hot and dry.

Full sun

Clematis vines tend to grow best in full sun (where they receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day). The roots and base of the plant prefer to be kept cool and shaded, so a layer of gravel or mulch (or a shade cloth) can be helpful.

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

If you want your clematis to be happy (birthday) then plant it in well-drained soil that also retains some moisture. Mulching will help with moisture retention, and if your soil is on the heavy side, then mixing in some organic compost when planting can be helpful.

Feed every spring

During early spring, feed your clematis plant with a high-potassium fertiliser, then mulch around its base with some garden compost (this helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds). If you're container-growing your clematis, then feed it each month of the growing season with a general-purpose liquid feed.
