The highlights

  • Wonderful weeping tree
  • Medium tree - grows up to 5m
  • Purple to bronze leaves, magenta blooms
  • Perfect for a front lawn feature tree

Description

  • 'Crimson Cascade' is a crabapple with some serious ornamental firepower. The tree's delicately weeping boughs are adorned with purple-tinged green leaves in the spring, which go on to develop attractive bronze and copper hues come autumn.
  • Alongside the fabulous foliage, this tree also produces elegant crimson-to-magenta blossoms in spring, as well as dusky purple crabapples (which are loved by birds) from late summer, often persisting for several months.
  • Perfect for medium-sized gardens, growing to just four-and-a-half metres tall, this cultivar is the very definition of a feature tree. Offering genuine year-round interest (the weeping branches look incredibly graceful when bare in winter) and an easygoing nature, few trees come close to this pink and purple powerhouse.
  • Use your harvest of crabapples to make a homemade jelly, which you can then spread on buttered toast, serve with cheese and cold meats or offer up alongside roast pork.
  • Crabapple trees have been recognised by the RHS with its Plants for Pollinators designation, indicating its benefits to pollinating insects like butterflies and bees.

Best growth will occur in full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day) but partial shade is tolerable.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Grows best in moist (but well-drained) soil with good levels of fertility.

Feed in early spring

Crabapple trees benefit from an application of high-potassium fertiliser each year at the start of spring.
