Good pest and disease resistance
Acers are usually pretty healthy and robust, but even the toughest plants aren't immune to the occasional issue or two. For example, aphids might be a problem for you acer. These can be dealt with quickly and easily, however, by spraying the affected area with some soapy water.
Water well when establishing
Acers appreciate regular watering as they establish, especially during hot, dry spells. Beyond this, only the occasional summer watering will be needed.
Full sun to partial shade
For the most eye-catching leaf colour, plant your acer in partial shade (four to six hours of direct sunlight per day). It will still grow in full sun, however.
Any moist, well-drained soil
Acers like a soil that drains well but that still retains some moisture. In terms of pH, these shrubby trees prefer a soil that's slightly acidic to neutral.
Feed every February
Whilst acers can get by pretty happily without any additional feeding, an application of general-purpose fertiliser come February can help give your tree a little boost.
