The highlights

  • Glorious columnar tree
  • Large tree - grows higher than 12m
  • Glossy, tactile leaves and bowl-shaped blooms
  • Wonderfully fragrant flowers

Description

  • A large evergreen tree with glossy, dark green foliage and beautifully fragrant, cup-shaped white flowers that can grow up to 25cm in diameter… Yes, you read that right!
  • This slow-growing tree will grow to more than 12 metres over half a century if left unpruned, but can easily be kept in trim to fit a smaller space, making it a lovely specimen tree for a lawn, wall side bed or shrub border.
  • Flowering throughout August and September, 'François Treyve' is a fully hardy, four-season tree which likes a position in full sun (or partial shade) and thrives in any well-drained, fertile soil – even chalk.
  • The bouquet of the blooms features refreshing, bold notes of lemon as well as subtler floral hints. Also known as the ‘bull bay’, Magnolia grandiflora is native to south-eastern parts of the USA, including Virginia, Florida and Texas.
  • Low-maintenance and easy to grow, this tree is a great option for gardeners who want maximum impact from minimum effort.

How to grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Good pest and disease resistance

Magnolias can suffer from Coral spot, grey mould and honey fungus. To prevent fungal disease, prune to allow plenty of air to circulate through the branches and allow plenty of space around the tree.

Keep well watered

Keep well watered

Water in thoroughly when planting. For bare root trees, you won't need to water regularly, only in dry spells when needed. You should be able to tell because the leaves will start to wilt and droop. Container grown trees will need more watering until their roots are established. Your tree should be watered every other day or so for the first few months, then reduce to twice a week until autumn. In the second year and beyond, it should have an established enough root system to support itself, just water when required. When watering a tree it is important to give a good soaking, watering heavily and less frequently rather than little and often as this encourages the roots to grow deep down into the ground.

Full sun to partial shade

Full sun to partial shade

This tree loves full sun or partial shade in a sheltered location. Choosing a spot away from strong winds will allow all the tree's resources to go towards growing blossom and protecting its display

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Prefers well-draining clay, loam, acid or neutral soils.

Feed in autumn

Feed in autumn

Magnolia trees need lots of mulch - ideally every autumn they should get a good helping of compost, leaf mould or well-rotted manure.

Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Satisfied customer

Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.
