The highlights

  • More intense sweetness than table grapes
  • Displays great resistance to fungal diseases
  • Can be used to create various different wines
  • Harvest from August to October

Description

  • This wine grape is an underappreciated gem as far as we're concerned! Most commonly grown these days in the US, this intense red grape can be used to make a variety of different wines, from light-bodied reds all the way through to sweet, fortified dessert wines
  • Grape vines offer your garden immense ornamental value, thanks to their attractive fruit bunches and lobed, serrated foliage
  • Named after a famous French general who served in WW1, this grape vine is as tough as an old, grizzled veteran, and will survive the majority of British winters
  • There are a number of ways you can grow your grape vine, including the rod-and-spur and guyot methods, depending on what you want and the space you have available to you
  • This grape is technically what's known as a teinturier grape, which differs from other red wine grapes in that it has red flesh and juice, unlike red wine grapes, which despite their skins, actually still have white interior flesh and juice

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

This variety is known for being resistant to a number of different fungal diseases. It may still be susceptible to scale insects, but small populations can generally be tolerated.

Water well when establishing

Grape vines should be regularly watered throughout their first growing season in order to help them establish. It's particularly important that you keep container-grown vines (and those grown by the base of a wall) regularly watered.

Full sun

Plant your grape vine somewhere that it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Grape vines typically grow best in rich, fertile soil with ample drainage. If your soil is naturally on the heavier side, then consider amending with some organic matter (like well-rotted manure) to improve how it drains.

Feed every spring

Ground-grown grape vines benefit from a feed in the springtime with a fertilier that's high in potassium, whilst plants grown in containers should be fed with a more regular liquid feed throughout the growing season.
