Norway Maple Tree
Acer platanoides 'Royal Red'
- Few trees are as striking as Acer platanoides 'Royal Red'. With burgundy-coloured foliage that takes on orange and yellow hues come autumn, as well as radiant yellow springtime blooms, this maple makes for a spectacular feature tree in medium to large-sized gardens.
- Naturally vigorous, 'Royal Red' will easily grow to more than 12m should you let it, but it can also be pruned to be kept at a shorter, more manageable height as well.
- Nice and easy to grow, this maple will reward you with decades of loyal service with very little needed by way of maintenance (unless you're actively restricting its height, that is, in which case pruning needs will be a bit greater).
- Plant in an avenue alongside other Norway maples, or if you've got the space, create an 'arboretum' dedicated entirely to trees with superb autumn colour (featuring sweetgum trees and the like).
- Certified as one of the Royal Horticultural Society's Plants for Pollinators, 'Royal Red' will help attract beneficial pollinating insects like bees and butterflies to your garden.

Will this grow in my garden?
Can I grow this in a pot?
Yes, Norway Maple Tree can be grown in a pot. A 50-60cm pot is ideal. It can live in a pot long-term if repotted every few years. Ensure good drainage and protect roots from freezing temperatures below -5°C.
How big does it get?
The Norway Maple Tree can grow to a substantial height of 15 to 20 metres and a spread of 10 to 15 metres, although it can be maintained at a smaller size with regular pruning.
How much sunlight does this need?
Norway Maple Tree prefers dappled shade.
What kind of soil does this plant prefer?
Norway Maple Tree prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil to thrive. Ensure the soil does not freeze below -5°C for optimal root health, applying a 5cm layer of mulch in winter.
How much watering does this plant need?
Norway Maple Tree requires regular watering, especially during its first few years of establishment. Provide approximately 10 to 20 litres of water per week, ensuring the soil remains moist but well-drained. During hot weather above 25°C, increase watering frequency to prevent the roots from drying out.
Will this plant need pruning?
Norway Maple Tree should be pruned while fully dormant in winter, ideally when temperatures are below 5°C, to prevent sap bleeding.
How hardy is this plant?
Acer platanoides 'Royal Red' is extremely hardy in the severest European continental climates, with an RHS hardiness rating of H7, surviving temperatures colder than -20°C.
