- The sight of a sun-soaked olive tree on a hot summer's day might make you first think of an Italian or Greek hillside, but the reality is that it could be from your very own kitchen window!
- Did you know that Olives actually fruit well in our climate and so you can pick your own, direct from the tree. All you need to add is a chilled white wine and those little cubes of cheese....
- Nice and compact, our patio olive trees are simply perfect for terraces and balconies, as well as planting as part of landscaped borders.
- Place your tree in a sunny, sheltered position, then sit back and enjoy its elliptical evergreen foliage and dainty white flowers that appear from late spring into early summer.
- This tree looks fantastic as part of a broader Mediterranean planting scheme; plant alongside patio citrus and fig trees, lavender hedges and star jasmine for some added verticality.

Can I grow this in a pot?
Yes, the Patio Olive Tree is very well suited to container growing. A large terracotta pot is ideal as it provides stability and allows the roots to breathe. Ensure excellent drainage by adding crocks to the bottom and using a free-draining compost mix. While hardy, keeping it in a pot allows you to protect it from severe winter frosts (below -5°C) and excessive winter wet.
How big does it get?
It is slow-growing and can eventually reach 3-5 metres in the ground, but is easily kept much smaller in a pot.
How much sunlight does this need?
It requires a position in full sun, and because it is very drought-tolerant once established, it loves the heat of a south-facing wall.
What kind of soil does this plant prefer?
The olive tree needs very well-drained soil, so a mix of loam-based compost and grit is ideal to prevent waterlogging around the roots.
How much watering does this plant need?
Water regularly during the first few years and through the growing season if kept in a pot. Do not let the root ball dry out completely.
Will this plant need pruning?
Prune in spring or early summer to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased wood. It responds well to light trimming.
How hardy is this plant?
The patio olive tree is surprisingly hardy (H4) and can tolerate temperatures down to -10°C once established in free-draining soil. It performs well in milder coastal or urban microclimates but may require horticultural fleece for winter protection in colder northern regions.
