The highlights

  • Sweet and juicy (eating)
  • Purple on both the inside and outside
  • Perfect for snacking and lunchboxes
  • Harvest from September to October

Description

  • 'Scuse me while I kiss the sky! Not the subject of the Jimi Hendrix song (as far as we know), but every bit as cool. Purple Haze produces distinctive dark pink to purple blossom in the spring and has dark red foliage that matures to dark green by late summer. The apples are purple with bright red flesh and heart shaped white centres - sweet, crisp and delicious but also kind of a work of art
  • Perfectly sized for patio pots and naturally columnar in its habit
  • Harvest your apples between September and October
  • Awarded RHS Plants for Pollinators status - even the bees love it
  • Sweet and juicy taste with some acidity
  • Perfect for eating fresh from the tree
  • Whatever it is put a spell on me
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

Rootstock

M26 rootstock (grows up to 3m)
Apple tree varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. M26 apple trees tend to only reach 3m tall, perfect for smaller spaces or those afraid of stepladders.

50cm
Plant 50cm apart to allow for spreading

How to grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Good pest and disease resistance

Pest and disease resistance is above average.

Water in well

Water in well

Water in thoroughly when planting. For bare root trees, you won't need to water regularly, only in dry spells when needed. You should be able to tell because the leaves will start to wilt and droop. If a container grown tree, it will need more watering until its roots are established. It should be watered every other day or so for the first few months. Then reduce to twice a week until autumn. In the second year it should have an established enough root system to support itself, just water when required as explained above for bare roots. When watering a tree it is important to give a good soaking. It is better to water heavily and less frequently than little and often as this encourages the roots to grow down into the ground.

Full sun

Full sun

Plant where the tree will receive around 6-8 hours of sunlight daily in spring/summer.

Happy in most soils

Happy in most soils

Prefers fertile well draining soil, can also tolerate clay soil but you will need to take some steps to improve drainage in the winter.

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Satisfied customer

Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.
