The highlights

  • Zone 1 to 2 - Pondside to pond edges
  • Grows best in full sun
  • Flowers from July to November
  • Offers great interest towards the year's end

Description

  • With its starry white bracts and strappy green leaves, star grass is simply a must-have for any pondside or bog garden!
  • Offering colour all the way through to November, this plant provides an excellent option for those gardeners looking to keep their pond fresh and attractive, even as the year winds down
  • Spreading slowly using underground rhizomes, this sedge plant will live a long time and is tough to boot (having been rated as fully hardy by the RHS)
  • Alongside the plant's colourful bracts, its spiky foliage also adds great variety from a textural perspective
  • You can also plant your star grass in your beds and borders, but bear in mind that it needs consistently moist, boggy soil to grow well, so you can't let it dry out!

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

This plant is generally robust and healthy, though it can be affected by aphids - these can be left alone and tolerated if numbers are only small. Otherwise, spray the affected area with soapy water.

Keep well watered

If you've planted your star grass in boggy soil, rather than submerged in shallow water, than make sure the soil never dries out.

Full sun

Plant somewhere your star grass will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any moist, boggy soil

Plant in your pond (up to 5cm water depth) or at its margins, in reliably damp soil.

Feeding may be needed

Feeding isn't typically required if you plant your star grass straight into a mature, established pond, due to the existing nutrient content of pond water. In a non-pond setting, however, it's a good idea to feed in the spring, using a slow release general fertiliser.
