The highlights

  • Grows well in both sun and part shade
  • Great for containers and mid-borders
  • Flowers from June to October
  • HTA award winner (2020)

Description

  • A semi-double floral jewel like no other, this anemone will elevate your beds and borders to soaring new heights, thanks to its ruffled, lilac-tinged flowers (complete with vibrant, yolk-yellow stamens) which sway gracefully on delicately dancing stems
  • One of the things that sets this anemone apart from other varieties is its long flowering season, with blooms opening up from purple buds from mid-summer all the way through to the middle of autumn
  • A versatile plant, 'Frilly Knickers' can be grown in patio pots, in the front/middle of the border, or as part of a more informal wildlife meadow or traditional cottage garden scheme
  • For most people, if you called them a clump, you'd be (not unjustly) met with a lump to the face, but in the case of 'Frilly Knickers', it's very much a complement! Its clump-forming habit means it's more easily contained and managed, and is therefore great for gardens with more limited space
  • In 2020, 'Frilly Knickers' won the Virtual Visitors Vote at the Horticultural Trades Association's Virtual New Plants Awards, receiving a whopping one-third of the total votes!

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally untroubled by pests or disease, save for the odd issue with caterpillars, slugs and powdery mildew.

Water well when establishing

To help your anemone establish, water it well throughout its first growing season. Once established, it will only need additional watering in dry spells or if you're growing the plant in a container.

Full sun to partial shade

Anemones like 'Frilly Knickers' prefer part or dappled shade, but will still grow well in full sun (just steer clear of planting somewhere where they'll receive too much bright, direct light as this can contribute to the plant drying out).

Any moist, well-drained soil

Grows nicely in most soil types, preferring more fertile conditions where possible.

No feeding required

Although routine feeding isn't typically needed, provided your soil is somewhat fertile, your anemone will benefit from a mulch in the spring; something like well-rotted manure works well.
