How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Cordyline is pretty tough and resistant to disease, but watch out for unusually cold winters as in 2010 (the coldest winter on record) a disease called Cordyline Slime Flux resulted from frost damage to this species. We hope this is a one-off! Occasionally cordylines are affected by scale insects. These suck the sap from plants and look like shell-like bumps on the stems and undersides of leaves - check your plants frequently from spring onwards. Light infestations are harmless, but for larger populations, you can remove them by hand or encourage predators like ladybirds, parasitoid wasps and birds.

Water lightly

To begin with water the plant lightly, especially during dry periods. Once the roots have established, Cistus needs very little watering except in prolonged hot and dry periods.

Full sun to partial shade

Your plant will enjoy a sheltered or exposed position with around 6 hours of sunlight daily and some afternoon shade

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Any well drained soil is fine - cordylines hate to be waterlogged! Mix in plenty of organic matter such as quality garden compost along with perlite if your soil is particularly clay-heavy or waterlogged.

Feeding not required

You don't need to feed your Cordyline if it's in the ground. Plants in pots need feeding with a slow release feed, twice a year: once in spring and once in mid summer. ?v=1613300718
