The highlights

  • Produces an abundance of flowers in spring
  • Delightful, heart-shaped foliage
  • Highly attractive to pollinators
  • Hardy and easy to grow

Description

  • Masses of tiny pink blossoms precede the appearance of this tree's foliage, covering its stems in the springtime and giving it a beautiful, bold appearance
  • Broad, cordate leaves with a smooth texture run through several colours during the year; starting out a brownish green, they then become a deeper green in summer, before finally turning an attractive yellow in autumn
  • Has more of a vase-like form when young, maturing to a rounded (or flat-topped) crown with age. Over time, the branches will spread irregularly and the trunk(s) may become contorted and twisted
  • Eastern Redbud trees are easy to grow and low maintenance; for the best flowers, plant in a sheltered, sunny spot!
  • This plant often has multiple stems and can either be grown as a small tree or large shrub
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally has good resistance, but watch out for scale insects and infections like coral spot. To prevent coral spot and other similar diseases, always make sure to prune in dry weather. When you're pruning, cut branches through the collar (ring of slight swelling found at the base of branches). If die-back occurs after pruning, remove dead material as this helps avoid further infection. Scale insects suck the sap from plants and look like shell-like bumps on the stems and undersides of leaves - check your tree frequently for these from spring onwards. Light infestations are harmless and tolerable, but for larger populations, you can either remove them by hand or encourage predators like ladybirds, parasitoid wasps and birds.

Water regularly

Water well roughly twice per week when your tree is newly planted. After a month or so, reduce this to a good soak once weekly (more may be needed in hotter, drier spells). Once the tree has established after a couple of years, or so, it will display good drought tolerance.

Full sun to partial shade

Plant in a sunny, sheltered position. This tree will tolerate dappled shade but typically flowers best in full sun (at least 6 hours of sunlight per day).

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

Prefers fertile, well draining soil. To improve drainage, consider mixing in some horticultural grit or perlite to the surrounding soil when planting.

Feed in spring

Apply a general, slow-release fertiliser (that's been designed for trees/shrubs) in the springtime.
