Field Maple Tree
Acer campestre
- A truly lovely tree, the Acer campestre is the United Kingdom's only native maple - and what a maple. Often living for many centuries, these attractive trees are primarily known for their fabulous autumn colour.
- Starting out a mid-green colour, the lobed foliage goes on to adopt golden yellow or fiery red hues later in the year. Small chartreuse flowers go on to develop into winged fruits that help with seed dispersal in the wind.
- If you're struggling to discern between this maple and other commonly-found maples in the UK, like sycamores and Norway maples, then look at the leaves; the more rounded foliage is the giveaway that what you're dealing with is a field maple.
- Traditionally, field maple wood has been used for carving and making musical instruments, as well as for warding off evil and witchcraft!
- Field maples have been certified with RHS Plants for Pollinators status, indicating its benefits to pollinating insects like bees and butterflies.

Can I grow this in a pot?
Yes, Field Maple Tree can be grown in a pot. A 50-60cm pot is ideal. It can live in a pot long-term if repotted every few years. Ensure good drainage and protect roots from freezing temperatures below -5°C.
How big does it get?
The Field Maple Tree reaches a mature height of around 10 to 15 metres, with a spread of 8 to 10 metres, although it can be maintained at a smaller size with regular pruning.

What kind of soil does this plant prefer?
Field Maple Tree prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil to thrive. Ensure the soil does not freeze below -5°C for optimal root health, applying a 5cm layer of mulch in winter.
How much watering does this plant need?
Field Maple Tree requires regular watering, especially during its first few years of establishment. Provide approximately 10 to 20 litres of water per week, ensuring the soil remains moist but well-drained. During hot weather above 25°C, increase watering frequency to prevent the roots from drying out.
