Freeman Maple Tree
Acer x freemanii 'Autumn Blaze'
- If you're a fan of fiery autumn colour, then you're in for an absolute treat... This lovely maple is both fast-growing and lovely to look at. Its deciduous foliage starts out a lush green before taking on hues of the finest red garnet, come the end of the year.
- Perfect for larger gardens, this tree can reach an ultimate height of well over 12 metres. Don't worry, though, it can easily be kept shorter, too.
- The tree develops a broadly oval crown of deeply-dissected foliage, destined to stand out wherever it's planted. Freeman maples are a hybrid between red maples (Acer rubrum) and silver maples (Acer saccharinum).
- For the best autumn colour, plant your tree in full sun. Generally speaking, this tree is low-maintenance and easy to grow, requiring little by way of additional care once planted (save for pruning to restrict overall size).
- A recipient of the RHS's Award of Garden Merit, 'Autumn Blaze' has been shown to perform particularly well in British gardens.

Will this grow in my garden?
Can I grow this in a pot?
Yes, Freeman Maple Tree can be grown in a pot. A 50-60cm pot is ideal. It can live in a pot long-term if repotted every few years. Ensure good drainage and protect roots from freezing temperatures below -5°C.
How big does it get?
The Freeman Maple Tree grows to a mature height of 15 to 20 metres, with a spread of 10 to 12 metres, although it can be maintained at a smaller size with regular pruning.
How much sunlight does this need?
Freeman Maple Tree prefers dappled shade.
What kind of soil does this plant prefer?
Freeman Maple Tree prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil to thrive. Ensure the soil does not freeze below -5°C for optimal root health, applying a 5cm layer of mulch in winter.
How much watering does this plant need?
Freeman Maple Tree requires regular watering, especially during its first few years of establishment. Provide approximately 10 to 20 litres of water per week, ensuring the soil remains moist but well-drained. During hot weather above 25°C, increase watering frequency to prevent the roots from drying out.
Will this plant need pruning?
Freeman Maple Tree should be pruned while fully dormant in winter, ideally when temperatures are below 5°C, to prevent sap bleeding.
How hardy is this plant?
The Freeman maple holds an RHS hardiness rating of H6, making it fully hardy in the UK and capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -20°C.
