The highlights

  • Flowing flower sprays up to half a metre long
  • Radiates a lovely scent
  • Prefers full sun but tolerates part shade
  • Blooms from May to June

Description

  • One of the very best Japanese wisteria varieties, 'Royal Purple' is long-lived, vigorous and fully hardy, making it an excellent choice for British gardens
  • Long, lilac-purple flower sprays bloom at the end of spring and the start of summer, instantly transforming the surface your wisteria is trained against
  • An ideal choice for any cottage garden planting scheme; rustic charm? This wisteria offers it in sumptuously-scented spades!
  • The stunning flower racemes are set against a lush, light green backdrop of pinnate compound leaves, which fall in winter and expose fantastically architectural woody stems. In other words, this is a climber that offers true year-round interest
  • A wisteria of many names - including 'Black Dragon', 'Russelliana' and 'Kokuryu' - 'Royal Purple' looks utterly fantastic when trained up a stone (or brick) wall, fence or free-standing pergola
  • A deserving recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Might be affected by aphids, spider mites and scale insects, and from a disease perspective, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and mildew.

Water regularly when first planted

Water your 'Royal Purple' wisteria well when first planted, particularly during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather. After the first couple of years, however, the plant should be established well enough that it only needs watering lightly (if at all).

Full sun to partial shade

For the best flowers, full sun (at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day) is desirable. That said, 'Royal Purple' will still grow nicely in part shade.

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

If your soil is especially heavy or is prone to becoming waterlogged, then ensure you mix in plenty of organic matter and perhaps even gravel or horticultural grit to help improve drainage.

Feed every spring

Apply a general, well-balanced fertiliser every year during spring. This encourages greater flower growth.
