The highlights

  • Delightfully moreish, soft-shelled nuts
  • Makes a spectacular specimen tree
  • Coat in paprika for a spiced snack
  • Harvest from late September

Description

  • A highly attractive and compact tree with clouds of scented pale pink blossom in spring
  • Produces high quality sweet almonds in soft shells
  • Harvest from late September
  • Self fertile - you only need one tree for a good crop
  • Grow in full sun on a south or west facing wall, or in a greenhouse or conservatory
  • Grows to 5 x 5m but can be pruned to fit any size of garden
  • Almonds can be eaten straight from the tree or used in baking and desserts
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

How to grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally disease free, can be affected by canker or leaf curl. With leaf curl the leaves blister and curl - the only solution is to pick off the infected leaves as they form in the Spring. Usually the new growth will come clean by early summer.

Full sun

Full sun

Needs a sunny position on a south or west facing wall - can also be grown in a conservatory or greenhouse.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Prefers fertile well draining soil. Can also tolerate clay soil but you will need to take some steps to improve drainage, such as mixing in fine horticultural grit or perlite to the surrounding soil when planting.

Prune in winter

Prune in winter

Winter pruning is best. Having planted a young tree it should be cut back by one third to promote a bushy shape. A new leader will form the first summer. Any lower branches can also be removed to create a clear trunk. In subsequent years prune to promote a fairly open centre; older trees often develop dead or unproductive wood. Don’t be afraid to prune back to viable new growth which will then take over.

10 May

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Satisfied customer

Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree

A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.

Exceptional quality

The quality of the plants was exceptional, unlike ones I have had before from local garden centres. Thank you so much. I will definitely be using you again.
