The highlights

  • Graceful, weeping branches on a slender trunk
  • Alluring purple leaves turn copper in autumn
  • Looks just as good when bare in winter!
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • A distinctive purple beech with a tall, slender central leader, branches that weep wavily downwards, and deep purple foliage
  • The rich purple leaves take on a coppery hue in the autumn. Thanks to its striking form, the tree provides great visual interest even in the winter months
  • A fully hardy tree that can withstand temperatures down to -20°C
  • 'Purple Fountain' holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, meaning it's been recommended by the organisation
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Can be affected by beech scale insects and aphids, though these rarely present a serious issue. This tree can also be affected by bracket fungi, mildew (powdery) and beech bark disease.

Water regularly when establishing

Beech trees require regular watering (twice-weekly) during the first growing season, particularly during hotter, drier spells. Once established, this tree will be tolerant to drought.

Full sun to partial shade

Grows well in both sun and partial shade but will provide the greatest colour when planted in full sun.

Any well-drained soil

Grows well in most soil conditions, provided that drainage is good. If your soil's drainage needs improving, consider adding some perlite or horticultural grit.

Feed in spring

Apply a slow-release fertiliser (preferably one designed specifically for trees/shrubs) under the canopy during spring.
