The highlights

  • Orange canes with reddish stems that turn green in summer
  • Create a living screen or patio feature
  • Shade tolerant - plant in any light level
  • Low maintenance - one of the hardiest bamboos

Description

  • This lush, clump-forming bamboo makes the perfect feature in a container, with an orange outer to the culms (canes) and reddish stems which turn green in summer
  • Also works well in a border with other large foliage plants or as a decorative natural noise barrier
  • A fabulously coloured, evergreen plant which grows to 3-4m high but is easily clipped to any height
  • One of the hardiest of all bamboos, rarely bothered by cold, pests or diseases
  • Plant in well draining soil in any position - Asian Wonder is shade tolerant and thrives in any light level
  • Never buy garden canes again - as new culms are formed every year, you can harvest the old ones to use as plant supports

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Generally disease free - protect the young stems as they can be targeted by slugs and snails

Water regularly

Water your bamboo thoroughly at planting time and make sure it doesn’t dry out until established (around 1yr after) Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established it shouldn’t need additional watering.

Shade to partial shade

Plant in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds and too much direct sun

Moist, well drained loam soil

Shallow rooted bamboo thrives in moist, well-drained loamy soil which won't get waterlogged

Feed annually

Bamboo benefits from some well rotted manure mixed into the soil when planting and an annual mulch with more of the same or compost. You can also add a handful of chicken manure pellets in spring and summer.

Tuscany

Meet Andreas

Start with a touch of Tuscan sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Andreas steps in! Some plants need to start life in the warmth of sunny Tuscany, where Andreas nurtures them to maturity before handing over to Danielle in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
