Red Hazelnut Tree
Corylus avellana 'Rote Zellernuss'
- This variety is a filbert (a type of hazelnut).
- An upright, deciduous small tree with colourful, heart-shaped leaves which emerge dark purple in spring, turn green in summer and mature to maroon in autumn.
- Reliable crops of red or purple nuts in autumn.
- A neat, low maintenance little nut tree ideal for any size of garden, growing to just 3 x 3m and can be pruned smaller.
- Pink catkins appear in spring, attracting early pollinators.
- RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.
- Grow in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered spot.
- Can be grown as a specimen tree or used for screening or hedging. The attractive branches are commonly used in floristry.
- Filberts are round, medium-sized tree nuts that come in a smooth hard wooden shell. They can be distinguished from cobnuts by their larger husks, but the main thing you need to know is that they're absolutely delicious!
