Columnar Rowan Tree
Sorbus x thuringiaca 'Fastigiata'
- A truly charming rowan, 'Fastigiata' starts life with a columnar habit, becoming more oval with age. With its dark green leaves, dainty springtime flowers and vivid red berries, this slow-growing specimen certainly makes an impact!
- Its best season is arguably autumn, when its foliage takes on bright orange hues, serving as a brilliant backdrop against which the red berries can really shine.
- Ideal as a feature tree for medium to large-sized gardens, this rowan is fully hardy and will be able to withstand whatever the British winters can throw its way. Add to that its tolerance of pollution (and heat) and you start to see just why we're so fond of it.
- The berries are a big hit with the birds, attracting species like blackbirds, thrushes, fieldfares and redwings. So, if you're looking to bolster your garden's wildlife credentials, you could do a lot worse than looking at this terrific tree.
- Did you know? Rowan trees were historically planted alongside homes to help ward off witches!

Yes, Columnar Rowan Tree can be grown in a large container (50-60cm). It is generally fine long-term but will need regular feeding and watering. Protect from extreme heat above 30°C.
How big does it get?
The Columnar Rowan Tree reaches a height of around 6 to 8 metres, with a narrow spread of 2 to 3 metres, although it can be maintained at a smaller size with regular pruning.
How much sunlight does this need?
Columnar Rowan Tree prefers full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive.
What kind of soil does this plant prefer?
Columnar Rowan Tree prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, but is quite adaptable to most soil types including clay, loam, and chalk. It tolerates winter ground temperatures down to -10°C. Plant in a hole at least 50cm wide for best results.
How much watering does this plant need?
Columnar Rowan Tree requires regular watering, especially during its first few years of establishment. Provide approximately 10 to 20 litres of water per week, ensuring the soil remains moist but well-drained.
