'Sunburst' Cherry Tree

  • Have your (cherry) cake and eat it, too! 'Sunburst' is a sweet, rich black cherry that's not just for cooking but also eating fresh. In fact, it was the original sweet black cherry. The OG, if you will.
  • A mid-season variety, your cherries will be ripe and ready to pick around the second or third week of July. Self-fertile, 'Sunburst' will produce good crops all by itself without pollination by another tree.
  • Ultra reliable, 'Sunburst' won't let you down, run around or des(s)ert you, instead producing impressive yields year on year. It also boasts good disease resistance and laughs in the face of pests.
  • Thanks to its Colt rootstock, this tree can be grown in a pot and has a max height and width of 4m. Rootstocks restrict the size of a tree to make it more suited for an average garden.
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch.
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE
  • Our mature trees are grown in Air-Pots®, the only type of pot to completely eliminate root circling. A unique design stimulates air pruning for a mass of healthy fibrous roots, which results in a healthy tree that will establish quickly in your garden. With each Air-Pot® made to last up to 20 years, we reuse them on the nursery and wrap your mature tree in hessian for delivery - but if you’d rather keep your tree potted, simply add an Air-Pot® to your basket along with your tree.

What to expect

Supplied as

9L Eco Pot
This tree is supplied in a 9L Eco Pot, which is approx W15 x H30cm. Eco Pots use 70% less plastic then traditional pots and can be recycled easily. A 9L pot allows ample space for good root development and can support a good size tree.

Height on arrival

120-150cm inc. pot

Eventual height

2m

Eventual spread

4m

Tasting notes

Very sweet with a rich flavour

Time to first crop

2 Years
You may see your first cherries 2 years after planting, but you should not expect substantial crops until the 4/5th year.

Hardiness

Hardy
May require some protection from very late frosts as this can damage the flowers. This won't cause lasting damage to the tree but will reduce the yield of fruit that year.

Pollination group

4
Pollination groups relate to the time of the year when a tree flowers. Trees that flower at the same time can pollinate each other, which helps produce fruit if not self-fertile, and can still improve yields even if they are. Trees can usually pollinate a group either side of their own; i.e "2" can Pollinate 1, 2 and 3.

Rootstock

Colt rootstock (grows up to 4m)
Cherry tree varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. Colt cherry trees tend to only reach 4m tall, perfect for smaller spaces or those afraid of stepladders. They can also be trained to a smaller size by pruning or restricting the roots, by keeping in a smaller pot
