The highlights

  • Cascading pastel lilac blooms from May
  • Perfect for training up a wall or pergola
  • Delightfully fragrant flowers
  • Highly tempting to pollinators

Description

  • A naturally compact wisteria that produces delightful cascading lilac blooms on stubby racemes up to 15cm in length
  • Clusters of wonderfully fragrant, purple flowers bloom from May to June
  • Dense green, feather shaped foliage offers a great contrast to the flowers, whilst the stiff, woody stems ensure rustic charm even during the winter months
  • Slightly less vigorous in its climbing than Japanese and Chinese wisteria varieties, American wisteria is a perfect choice for smaller gardens that still want a good climber to blanket walls, fences or pergolas. It also suits being grown in a pot, making it a great option for patio planting
  • Train up a sheltered, south facing structure that gets lots of sun to get the best results from your wisteria
  • This plant is a fabulous choice for pollinator gardens - bees adore the abundant nectar and pollen that wisteria flowers provide
  • 'Amethyst Falls' is a hardy perennial that, once established, can be relied upon to produce flowers every year
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Wisterias are generally not bothered by pests or disease. Aphids, Scale Insects, Powdery Mildews and Honey Fungus can occasionally affect the plant but the problems are usually not serious.

Water regularly when first planted

Water your wisteria well when it's newly planted, especially during prolonged periods of hot and dry weather. After the first couple of years the plant should establish itself well enough that it will only need to be watered very lightly (if at all).

Full sun to partial shade

Amethyst Falls' grows best in full sun where it receives a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight per day. It can still grow well in dappled shade, however.

Any fertile, well drained soil

If your soil is particularly clay heavy and gets waterlogged often, make sure you mix in plenty of organic matter and perhaps even gravel or perlite to help improve drainage.

Feed every spring

Feed in the spring with a well-balanced general purpose fertiliser (like Growmore).
