The highlights

  • Starts off olive green and matures to a glossy jet black
  • Create a striking living screen or focal point
  • Plant in full sun for the darkest colour
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • The most elegant of all the bamboos, with glossy ink-black canes covered in contrasting lush green leaves
  • Perfect for creating a natural screen or noise barrier in your garden, black bamboo also makes a stunning feature plant at the back of a border or in a large container
  • A versatile evergreen plant which grows to 4-5m high but is easily clipped to any height for a feature hedge
  • Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit
  • Plant black bamboo in full sun for the most intense colour - alternate it with a green bamboo like Bissetii for maximum contrast and remove the lower leaves and side shoots up to a height of 120cm to show off the canes to their best effect
  • Never buy garden canes again - as new culms are formed every year, you can harvest the old ones to use as plant supports

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Generally disease free - protect the young stems as they can be targeted by slugs and snails

Water regularly

Water your bamboo thoroughly at planting time and make sure it doesn’t dry out until established (around 1yr after) Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once established it shouldn’t need additional watering.

Full sun to partial shade

For the best colour, plant in full sun

Moist, well drained loam soil

Shallow rooted bamboo thrives in moist, well-drained loamy soil which won't get waterlogged

Feed annually

Bamboo benefits from some well rotted manure mixed into the soil when planting and an annual mulch with more of the same or compost. You can also add a handful of chicken manure pellets in spring and summer.

Tuscany

Meet Andreas

Start with a touch of Tuscan sun

Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Andreas steps in! Some plants need to start life in the warmth of sunny Tuscany, where Andreas nurtures them to maturity before handing over to John in the South Downs, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
