The highlights

  • Bushy, spreading tree
  • Medium tree - grows up to 6m
  • Glorious double pink blossoms
  • Radiates a lovely, balanced fragrance

Description

  • Crabapples are among the very finest ornamental trees (though you could argue they also fall into the fruiting category) out there, and 'Brandywine' is a mighty fine example of one.
  • With its highly floriferous nature, boasting masses of fully double, pastel pink blossoms in spring, this variety will elevate any garden its graces. Add to that the lovely floral fragrance and you begin to understand why it's such a favourite.
  • The flowers are ably supported in the visual department by the attractive foliage, which starts out a deep green colour before taking on charming purple, red and orange shades come the autumn. But wait, there's more...
  • It's time to talk about the crabapples, themselves. 'Brandywine' produces a glut of vivid yellow fruits, which provide birds with a valuable food source and, if you're able to get to them before the birds, make a lovely crabapple jelly (though if this is what you're looking for, then varieties with larger red crabapples might serve you better).
  • One thing to bear in mind: 'Brandywine' is self-sterile, so you can't rely on it to pollinate other apple or crabapple trees (something worth bearing in mind if you're planting multiple trees).

Water regularly while establishing

Throughout the tree's first growing season, water your tree regularly. Once established, it will only need additional watering during dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Best growth will occur in full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day) but partial shade is tolerable.

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Grows best in moist (but well-drained) soil with good levels of fertility.

Feed in early spring

Crabapple trees benefit from an application of high-potassium fertiliser each year at the start of spring.
