Description

  • With its delightful ruff (or should that be, woof, given the variety name?), 'Poodle Skirt' is a highly distinctive and striking dahlia variety
  • The burgundy pom pom and swept back, violet-pink petals combine brilliantly to produce flowers that vie for, no, demand your attention
  • Plant in beds and borders alongside other enticing perennials, or make it the sole star of the show by planting in a large patio pot
  • A heavy bloomer, this dahlia will reliably produce flowers through the summer months and into autumn!
  • A worthy winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's AGM, an indication of the plant's undeniable quality
  • In autumn, lift and store your dahlia tubers. Alternatively, if you live in a particularly mild area, then a generous application of mulch around the plant's base should suffice

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

'Poodle Skirt' isn't dissimilar to other dahlias in that it can have issues with slugs, aphids, capsid bugs, earwigs and powdery mildew. To defend against the bacterial infections, maintain good garden hygiene. Space plants out adequately to allow for good air circulation. For slugs and snails, it's important to keep the area around the plant free of debris and as dry as possible, especially at night as slugs and snails love damp conditions. You can use barriers (such as egg shells or copper wire around the plant) to prevent slugs and snails reaching the leaves. For aphids, check the leaves regularly for possible infestations. Pick the bugs off and spray the infected area with soapy water. You can also plant a companion plant nearby - marigolds, for instance - which will attract predatory insects such as ladybirds that will eat the aphids.

Water regularly

Water well, and in particular during hot and dry periods. It's best to water your dahlia(s) weekly, but if the plant looks dry or distressed during hotter spells, then give it some additional watering.

Full sun

Like most dahlias, 'Poodle Skirt' grows best in full sun (when it receives at least 6-8 hours of sunshine every day).

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

This dahlia should be planted in moist but well-draining soil that's rich in organic matter.

Feed regularly

Apply a general purpose feed when planting your dahlia. Then, from around July time through to September, feed your plant every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid feed (like tomato feed).
