The highlights

  • A big fan of full sunshine
  • Ideal for cottage gardens and herbaceous beds
  • Gorgeous flower towers from June to September
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • We wonder whether Marlowe or Goethe had delphiniums in mind when they wrote their epic Faustian tales? Probably not... Their loss, though, because this variety? Well, it's devilishly good!
  • Featuring upright spikes of semi-double blooms in a powdery cobalt blue-violet, this delphinium packs a punch wherever it's placed, but looks particularly good when planted in uniform blocks, or alongside foxgloves and lupins in contrasting hues
  • Other planting ideas for your delphinium include container planting (in a large pot) or the creation of a wildlife garden (alongside the likes of aquilegia and echinacea)
  • A couple of other features worth highlighting; 'Faust' makes an excellent cut flower for bouquets and will also attract lots of pollinators to your garden!
  • Fully hardy in nature, you can rely on this delphinium to survive even harsh winters and come back the following year
  • Faust' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, given to plants that perform exceptionally well in British gardens.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

This plant can be prone to damage from slugs and snails. It may also be susceptible to powdery mildew and have problems with aphids. For slugs and snails, it's advisable to keep the area around the plant free of debris and as dry as possible, especially at night. You can use barriers (like copper wire) to surround the plant and prevent the pests from reaching and damaging the leaves. You can also use specific nematodes that will target the pests where more serious control is required. To reduce the risk of downy mildew, avoid crowded and humid conditions. Proper spacing of plants is essential. Water at the plant's base to prevent splashing from the soil onto the leaves. To combat aphids, you can pick away the bugs with your hands and also wash the affected areas down with soapy water.

Water regularly in summer

Delphiniums flourish in moist soil so make sure you water often in summer so that the soil doesn't dry out. During hot, dry spells, this could require watering more frequently (every couple of days).

Full sun

Plant in a fully sunny spot where your plant will receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Any moist, fertile, well-drained soil

Plant your delphinium in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Amend your soil with organic matter or horticultural grit to improve drainage if necessary.

Feed regularly

Feed every week with a liquid fertiliser from when blooms first appear to the end of August.
