The highlights

  • Happy in full sun to full shade
  • Ideal for woodland gardens and shaded borders
  • Colour-changing evergreen foliage
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • 'Brilliance' is a wonderful fern variety which goes through several appealing hues throughout the year, starting out with eye-catching bronze fronds which mature to green as the year goes on
  • A fantastic option for moist and shady borders, woodland gardens and shrub underplanting
  • Like most ferns, this evergreen variety is easy to grow, hardy and very versatile; it isn't affected by pests, will survive UK winters, requires little to no pruning and can be planted in every type of light (though ferns in full sun will require more watering)
  • In autumn, the fronds develop particularly vivid red sporangia and spores on their underside, adding to the plant's already ancient and primal feel
  • This fern is a recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, which serves as an indicator of its quality and performance in British gardens

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Untroubled by pests or disease.

Water regularly during the first year

Your fern will need watering during its first year after planting to help it establish nicely. Beyond that, watering is only needed during hot, dry spells.

Full sun to full shade

Like most ferns, 'Brilliance' can grow well in all light conditions. If grown in a sunny position, take extra care to ensure that the plant doesn't dry out.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Tolerant of most soil types, this fern will do best in moist but freely-draining soil.

No feeding required/feed in spring

If your soil is poor, then consider applying an all-purpose fertiliser (like Growmore) once per year during spring. Otherwise, no feeding is required.
