Hostas

If you love hostas, we defy you to look at our grower’s choices without adding another to your collection! Choose from a plethora of leaf sizes, shapes and colours, then look forward to the clusters of small flowers that pop up every summer. Hostas are long-lived perennials, getting stronger each year and naturalising into clumps just as they would in their natural woodland habitat. All of ours are grown the traditional way by Jack in Herefordshire, for extra vigour and hardiness.

Meet Jack

Perennials born in Herefordshire, blooming in your garden

Our perennials start life in the rolling Herefordshire hills, where Jack and his team trial over 250 new varieties each year to bring you the best performing and most sustainable plants in the UK. With over forty years of excellence, it’s no surprise that they’ve won the HTA Plant Grower of the Year award two years running.

Which hosta?

Which hosta?

Thanks to the ever-growing number of hosta enthusiasts in the UK, there are a dizzying number of choices, with colours ranging from whites and creams to deep teal blues and forest greens. There’s as much variation in leaf texture and pattern too. Large leaved hostas like Snow Cap or Patriot are a great choice for a border, while miniature varieties like Lakeside Little Tuft are ideal for pots.

Planting schemes and partners

Planting schemes and partners

Hostas make the perfect groundcover for planting under deciduous trees, but we think they deserve to be shown off in pots too. No woodland garden is complete without them, and they’re the perfect partner for lush foliage plants like ferns and heucheras.

Growing tips

Growing tips

Hostas are beautifully undemanding, thriving in lightly shaded borders and needing no pruning or feeding. Once they’re established, your hostas won’t even need regular watering. Don’t worry if they seem to disappear in winter - hostas go dormant and come back every spring with their new fronds peeping through the soil as if to announce the start of a new gardening year.

Hosta FAQs

Where should I plant hostas in the UK?

The best place for hostas is a partially shaded spot with well draining soil. Their natural environment is under trees in a woodland, with dappled light coming through the tree canopies, so the closer you can get to this, the better they’ll grow.

When is the best time to plant hostas?

Spring and early autumn are the best times to plant hostas in the UK. This allows the plants to build up plenty of energy before they have to deal with any extreme weather conditions in summer or winter.

How do I care for hosta plants?

Water your hostas regularly when they're newly planted and during dry or hot weather, taking care not to let them get waterlogged. Feed them with a balanced fertiliser in spring and midsummer and mulch around the base of the plant in autumn. After a few years you may want to divide your hosta plant if it has become crowded or outgrown its space.

Can hostas grow in pots?

Hostas are perfect for growing in pots. Use a large container with good drainage holes in the bottom, and fill it with a good quality compost.

Do hostas flower?

Hostas are mainly grown for their foliage, but they also flower in summer, with small clusters of white, pink or lilac flowers on tall, slender stems.

How do I care for hosta plants over winter?

Don’t worry if your hosta ‘disappears’ over winter. The foliage will die back completely in colder regions but this is normal, and they’ll produce new growth in the spring. Give your hosta a good layer of mulch in autumn and this will make sure the plant’s roots are insulated against frost damage over the winter.
