The highlights

  • Glorious shrubby tree
  • Small tree - grows to 4m
  • Downwards-curving, purple, deciduous foliage
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • Discovered in the Trompenburg botanical gardens, near Rotterdam, this Japanese maple dazzles with its attractive lobed foliage (which takes on a whole spectrum of colours throughout the course of the year)
  • Starting out a burgundy colour in the spring, before becoming greener and then, finally, more orange in the autumn, 'Trompenburg' adds great ornamental value wherever it's placed
  • A relatively small tree, this acer will make a spectacular addition to any small or medium-sized garden as a feature tree
  • Easy to grow and low maintenance, plant this tree at the heart of your lawn or in a mixed border alongside other shrubs (like rhododendrons)
  • If you're wondering what to plant alongside your acer, we'd recommend ferns, astilbes and sedums as your starting point
  • This highly-regarded acer is a recipient of the RHS' Award of Garden Merit - a mark of its undoubted quality!
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Though Japanese maples are typically pretty hale and hearty, they can still be affected by the odd pest/disease from time to time, including aphids, scale insects and verticillium wilt.

Water well when establishing

As your acer establishes, it will benefit from regular watering (especially in hot, dry spells).

Full sun to partial shade

Like most acers, this variety's leaf colour will be best when planted in partial shade (roughly between four and six hours of direct sunlight per day). It will still grow nicely enough in full sun, however.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Your acer will grow best in soil that drains well but that still retains some moisture. If your soil's drainage is poor, consider amending it with some garden compost.

Feed every February

In February, give your acer a feed with general-purpose fertiliser (while it will still grow nicely without this, the fertiliser just helps give your tree an added little boost).
