The highlights

  • Burnt sienna stems, white summer flowers
  • Incredible winter stem colour
  • Average growth rate - 20-40cm per year
  • Grows up to 3m or keep trimmed at 1-3m

Description

  • One of the very finest dogwood varieties, 'Midwinter Fire' dazzles through the winter months with its vivid red and orange bare stems, which are best enjoyed when planted en masse in blocks.
  • Alongside its glorious stems, this plant also features creamy summertime blooms, jet-black berries and lush green foliage (which takes on fabulous autumnal hues later in the year).
  • While dogwoods can be grown in dense planting blocks or as an attractive hedge, they can also just as well be grown as an eyecatching, standalone shrub at the heart of your bed or border.
  • Fully hardy and easy to grow, this plant is a must-have for any winter garden as far as we're concerned!
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators; this shrub will help attract a whole host of beneficial pollinating insects (as well as birds) to your garden.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Typically unaffected by pests or diseases, though be watchful for horse chestnut scale and cornthus anthracnose.

Water well when establishing

Water your plant(s) well throughout the first growing season to help establishment. Once established, watering will only be needed in hot, dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

Best stem colour occurs in full sun (but partial shade is tolerated).

Any moisture-retentive soil

Dogwoods grow best in soil that retains moisture, making it a good option for damp sites.

Feed every spring

Apply a balanced fertiliser after springtime pruning.
