The highlights

  • Sweeter than regular 'Conference' pears
  • Great storage properties
  • Make a delicious chocolate pear pudding
  • Harvest from August to October

Description

  • 'Conference' is one of the nation's favourite pears, and now you can get a red version! 'Red Conference' sports all the same brilliant qualities as its green sibling, but with a subtly sweeter taste.
  • This dessert pear is delicious both eaten fresh and used in dishes and desserts (a decadent pear crumble is a particular favourite of ours).
  • Grafted onto a Quince A rootstock, this tree will grow to just four metres or so in height, making it an ideal choice for smaller gardens with room for only one fruit tree.
  • In spring, this tree produces delicate white blossoms that pollinating insects like bees and butterflies can't get enough of.
  • A good keeper, if you're looking for a pear with a shelf life, then this is a great pick.

Pollination groups relate to the time of the year when a tree flowers. Trees that flower at the same time can pollinate each other, which helps produce fruit if the tree isn't self fertile. Trees can usually pollinate a group either side of their own; i.e "3" can pollinate 2, 3 and 4.

Rootstock

Quince A rootstock (grows up to 4m)
Pear varieties are usually grown by grafting them onto rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable size. Quince A pear trees tend to only reach 4m tall, making them perfect for smaller spaces (or those afraid of stepladders). They can also be trained to a smaller size by pruning or by restricting the roots, through use of a smaller pot.

Spacing

4m
Plant four metres apart to allow for spreading.

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.
