The highlights

  • Loves sun and shelter
  • Great for covering an unsightly wall or fence
  • Bunches of ornamental grapes in autumn
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner

Description

  • Word on the grapevine is that this is one of the most attractive Vitis varieties out there! Its alluring, lobed leaves (which adopt different colours throughout the year) instantly elevate any sunny garden
  • The broad leaves start out a fresh green, before transitioning to shades of bronze, crimson and purple by the autumn
  • Growing to roughly 7m tall, this grapevine can be easily pruned to fit any small- or medium-sized garden
  • Train up a wall, trellis or pergola to add a touch of the Mediterranean to your outdoor space
  • Produces clusters of plum-coloured grapes throughout the autumn months. These are edible but generally left on the vine for ornamental appeal as they have a highly bitter taste
  • 'Purpurea' has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit - a sign of this grapevine's fantastic performance in UK gardens
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

The most common grapevine diseases are moulds and mildews, so it's important to keep the plants well spaced and with a good air flow around them. This plant can also be prone to mites, scale insects and fruit flies.

Water well at first

Water frequently when your plant is newly planted and establishing itself. After that, water during dry spells and avoid the soil drying out.

Full sun

Plant where the vine will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

Any well-drained soil

This grapevine will grow well in most free-draining soil but has a preference for a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.

Feed every spring

Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring.
