How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

May need protection against aphids (remove by hand, then spray the area with soapy water) or slugs (try a barrier of copper wire or crushed shells around the plant). If you notice discoloured foliage, you may have Astrantia Leaf Miner, whose larvae feed on the leaves. Flowers will still bloom, but if you want to control the larvae, you can encourage predators such as birds and parasitoid wasps to your garden.

Water well in summer

This plant needs nothing more than rain water throughout most of the year. During hot, prolonged dry periods in summer however, you may have to give the plant a good watering several times a week. If the plant starts to look distressed and the soil around it is very dry, then give the plant some more water and check up on it the next day.

Full sun to partial shade

Does best with around six hours of sunlight per day, preferably in the mornings, with some aftrenoon shade. Tolerates shadier areas well.

Any well drained soil

Astrantia prefers fertile, well-drained soil but will be fine in any normal well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly poor or clay heavy, add some garden compost with perlite to improve drainage.

Feeding not required

This is a low maintenance plant which gets all the nutrients it needs from the soil. ?v=1613300718
