How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Virtually pest free. Watch out for honey fungus and peony wilt. Honey fungus spreads underground and you may see honey-coloured mushrooms at the base of plants. Keep your plants healthy and it shouldn't appear, but if it does, dig out and dispose of affected plants. Peony wilt may be present if buds fail to open and leaves wilt - remove any affected parts and dispose of them.

Water regularly in summer

This plant needs nothing more than rain water throughout most of the year. During hot, prolonged dry periods in summer however, you may have to give the plant a good watering several times a week. If the plant starts to look distressed and the soil around it is very dry, then give the plant some more water and check up on it the next day.

Full sun to partial shade

Peonies do best in a sheltered spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily

Any average well-drained soil

Plant in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly poor or clay heavy, add some garden compost with perlite to improve drainage.

Feed twice yearly

Feed your peonies in the early spring and again half way through the growing season, with a low nitrogen fertiliser
