Patio Ginkgo Tree
Ginkgo biloba 'Mariken'
- With its superb yellow leaf colour in the autumn, 'Mariken' is a ginkgo tree that should be on everyone's radar.
- This patio-trained plant grows to just one-and-a-half metres (or so) in height, making it perfect for patios, balconies and terraces.
- The distinctive, fan-shaped leaves start out a rich light green colour, before becoming golden yellow towards the back end of the year.
- Did you know that ginkgo trees (also known as maidenhair trees) are old, like seriously old? In fact, ginkgo fossils have been found dating back a whopping 170 million years!
- A recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Mariken' has been shown to perform particularly well in British gardens.

Will this grow in my garden?
Can I grow this in a pot?
Yes, Patio Ginkgo Tree is a compact variety excellent for long-term container growing. Start with a 40-50cm diameter pot and repot every 2-3 years. Ensure the pot has good drainage. Protect the roots from severe frosts below -5°C.
How big does it get?
The Patio Ginkgo Tree is a dwarf variety, usually reaching a height and spread of just 1 to 1.5 metres.
How much sunlight does this need?
Patio Ginkgo Tree prefers full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive.
What kind of soil does this plant prefer?
Patio Ginkgo Tree prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, but is quite adaptable to most soil types including clay, loam, and chalk. It tolerates winter ground temperatures down to -10°C. Plant in a hole at least 50cm wide for best results.
How much watering does this plant need?
Patio Ginkgo Tree requires regular watering, especially during its first few years of establishment. Provide approximately 10 to 20 litres of water per week, ensuring the soil remains moist but well-drained. During hot weather above 25°C, increase watering frequency to prevent the roots from drying out.
Will this plant need pruning?
Patio Ginkgo Tree requires minimal pruning, best done in late winter.
How hardy is this plant?
The patio maidenhair tree is fully hardy with an RHS rating of H6, withstanding temperatures from -15°C to -20°C throughout the UK.

Start with a touch of continental sun
Over 99% of our plants are grown in the UK, but where that’s not possible, Mike sources the best specialist growers in Europe for the job. Think citrus warmed by Sicilian sun, topiary trained by Dutch masters, almonds nourished in the Dordogne and bamboo bathed in Tuscan heat. Our handpicked growers nurture these plants to maturity before handing over to our team in the Cotswolds, to toughen them up for UK gardens.
