Need help picking?

What are fast-growing climbing plants good for?
If you’ve got an ugly fence, a tired-looking wall or a pergola so bare it should be censored, then a fast-growing climber can offer the solution. These vigorous plants will quickly clothe a vertical surface, adding both visual impact and, in many cases, a form of privacy screening to boot. Certain climbers, like Clematis montana varieties, for instance, can grow up to 12 metres in just a decade or so. English ivy (Hedera helix) boasts a similarly speedy growth rate, growing several feet per year once established.

Which fast-growing climbers should you choose?
This very much depends on what you’re after in your garden, and your personal preferences as a gardener. If your sole objective is to cover your surface and to do so in less time than it takes to say Parthenocissus quinquefolia, then something like Virginia creeper is perfect. If, however, you want some added benefits, such as fabulous flowers or a sumptuous scent, then you might want to go for a wisteria like Wisteria sinensis 'Alba' or a star jasmine such as Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Star of Milano'.

Considerations for fast-growing climbers
The main thing to bear in mind is that if you’re choosing a vigorous climber, you’re choosing a vigorous climber… The clue’s in the name. These climbers will grow great guns and might require a little bit more maintenance to keep in check than other, more compact or slower-growing climbers do. Don’t let that put you off, however, because we’ve got heaps of grow guides for various climbers, including wisterias, so you’ll know exactly what you need to do as well as when to do it. Regularly water your plants when establishing and tie in young plants to your support just to give them a steer early on.
Happy plants make happy customers

Plants arrived in great condition and very promptly. Well established - much better than the ones I got at my local garden centre.
