The highlights

  • Mild, nutty and earthy
  • Great disease resistance
  • Sauté with bacon or pancetta
  • Plant in spring or autumn, harvest in autumn or winter

Description

  • Does any vegetable get a worse rep than the humble sprout? Probably not. Unfairly so? Abso-Brussels-lutely!
  • One of the easiest (and most distinctive-looking) vegetables to grow, we feel that sprout plants should be a firm staple of any brassica-focused plot
  • Aptly named, 'Brilliant F1' plants produce high-quality, flavourful sprout buds on tall, central stems
  • Slow-growing though these plants may be, taking several months before the sprouts are ready to harvest, the results are certainly worth the wait! Cook your sprouts in butter and garlic (chucking in some bacon for good measure) and you've got yourself a delectable seasonal side dish
  • Plant towards the end of spring and you'll have Brussels sprouts ready to harvest throughout the autumn and even into winter. You can also plant later on in the year in autumn
  • F1 varieties are hybrids that have typically been bred for benefits like improved yields and greater resistance to disease
  • If able, plant your sprouts in a sheltered position to protect from strong winds

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Just like other brassicas, brussel sprouts can suffer from cabbage root fly, club root, caterpillars and cabbage whitefly. It's a good idea to cover your sprout plant with a horticultural fleece to keep off pests and to ensure that your soil is well-drained and not too acidic (to help prevent club root). If this does occur - signs include the leaves wilting and turning purple, with swollen/bulbous roots below ground - you should avoid planting brassicas in that particular bed for the next four years. If you find a plant with club root, rip it up and either burn it or dispose of in the landfill bin.

Water regularly

Brussel sprout plants like moist soil so water your young plants regularly, reducing to a deep watering every fortnight when they've become well-established (this isn't needed if there's rain).

Full sun

Plant somewhere your brussel sprouts will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any neutral or alkaline, moist, well-drained soil

Plant in soil with good drainage but retains some moisture. If your soil is particularly acidic, then add some lime to raise its pH.

Feed in summer

In the middle of summer, apply a fertiliser that's high in nitrogen.
