The highlights

  • Does best in full sunshine
  • Looks fantastic when planted en masse
  • Intense flowers from June to October
  • Makes a striking addition to the patio

Description

  • Dahlia 'Cabernet' is to the eyes what a full-bodied glass of red is to the palate - big, bold and utterly beautiful
  • A variety that falls somewhere between a cactus dahlia and a waterlily dahlia in terms of its form, this plant features fully double blooms with enticing red, pointed petals, which bloom from summer and well into autumn
  • With its slender, upright stems and undeniably impactful blooms, this variety is a fantastic option when it comes to bouquet cutting
  • Either plant this dahlia on its lonesome in a large container, and let it shine as the star of the patio, or plant alongside yellow dahlia varieties for a striking pairing reminiscent of colour schemes from the '70s
  • If you're worried your dahlia is on the verge of flopping, tie it in to a bamboo cane using some garden twine
  • Unless you live in a particularly mild area, you'll need to lift and store your dahlia tubers for the winter, then replant them in spring

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Not unlike other dahlia varieties, 'Cabernet' can have issues with slugs, aphids, capsid bugs, earwigs and powdery mildew. To defend against bacterial infections, ensure good garden hygiene. Space your plants out to allow for adequate air circulation. For slugs and snails, ensure the area around the plant is kept free of debris and as dry as possible - particularly at night as slugs and snails flourish in damp conditions. You can use barriers (such as egg shells or copper wire around the plant) to prevent slugs and snails getting to the leaves. For aphids, check the leaves frequently for possible infestations. Pick the bugs off and spray the infected area with soapy water. Make sure you keep your tubers dry when you store them over winter, as they can be prone to rotting if moist.

Water regularly

Water frequently, particularly during hot, dry periods. It's best to water your dahlias once per week. If the plant looks dry or distressed during prolonged hot periods, however, then you may want to increase watering frequency.

Full sun

Plant this variety of dahlia somewhere it will receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any well-drained soil

'Cabernet' will grow well in any soil provided that it drains well, but also likes a soil that's enriched with organic matter.

Feed regularly

Apply a general purpose feed when planting your dahlia. Then, from July to September, feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid feed (like tomato feed).
